Aprons Again

I am thinking about making some simple aprons to go along with some of my “Goodies in a Jar” that I am making for my family for Christmas. I was thinking about printing this poem on some cool paper to include, too! What do you think? I am very open to suggestions!

The History of ‘APRONS’ I don’t think our kids know what an apron is. The principal use of Grandma’s apron was to protect the dress underneath because she only had a few.

It was also because it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and… aprons used less material. But along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven.

It was wonderful for drying children’s tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.

From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.

When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids.. And when the weather was cold grandma wrapped it around her arms.

Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove. Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.

From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.

In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.

When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.

When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men folks knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.

It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that ‘old-time apron’ that served so many purposes.

REMEMBER: Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool. Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw. They would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron.

I don’t think I ever caught anything from an apron – but love…

Vikings — History.com Articles, Video, Pictures and Facts.

We are studying The Vikings in World History this week. I am so happy to FINALLY be in the Middle Ages! Anyone have any other resources on Vikings or Middle/Dark Ages?

We are creating a MASSIVE time-line book as our final project. So far we are about to overflow a 3-inch binder. This is not just the line with little icons & dates. Agnes has been doing research on various people and events, creating “profiles”, writing original stories, and adding artistic projects to this book! I imagine we will need a few more binders by the time we get to the modern times… pictures to come!

What is Windows Live SkyDrive?

{{desc}}

I am thinking about using this to make access to the science experiments & corresponding worksheets accessible to all the Moms from the PWOC homeschool room. It will also be a great example of what I can do if I decide to teach Science again.

Has anyone else used any of the on-line Office programs? What did you think? Please, let me know!

Smart Quotes~updated 19JAN2010

I have the smartest, most well read friends. They have read everything from the classics to the obscure. Some of them create their own very wise sayings. Either way they always have the coolest quotes for their status. I have decided to collect the cool “Status Quotes” for future reference. I will give credit to the author of the quote, as well as the person doing the quoting, if I know it… Have fun with these words of, er… well have fun.

KneeHigh-Tops 1

KneeHigh-Tops 1

Oh, what a wonderful day! Agnes and I were out on our weekly lunch date. We had planned on going to Brueger’s Bagels, and we thought it was in the Bentley Mall. So we went inside the mall, and WOW! There was a major clearance sale! We went to the store where we saw the knee-high Converse High-tops last month, (Journeys.com) and what do you know… they were on sale! I remember wanting a pair when I was younger. Ok, I still want a pair, but there is nothing worse than an old lady trying to dress like a teenager! Anyway, Agnes tried them on, and they looked so cute. The salesgirl even showed her how to cuff her jeans so that you can see the high, high-tops.
Next store… I was looking for leggings. I can never seem to find them, and this store had a lot of 80’s, Madonna-type clothes. The name of the store is Hot Topic (Hottopic.com) and it reminds me of The Merry Go Round in the Savannah Mall. (That’s where I got the neon pink parachute pants with the black zippers and the neon yellow sweatshirt with the kiss prints all over it… ah, high school memories…) Well, Agnes hasn’t wanted to go into HT since I told her that I used to wear clothes like that, but once I got her inside, and she got to see some of the belts and jewelry… she was hooked. She is even getting her ears re-pierced so that she can wear the cool zipper earrings she got there! Granted there are more things that she is not allowed to wear in there than most other stores, but I have a responsible girl. She knows what is acceptable, and what is not.
Ok… I still need to finish my VBS and Sun Run entries, but I was so excited, I had to share!

The week before the Sun Run!

Well, this has been a week!

Monday, as I am running out the door to bring Agnes to a babysitting job, the phone rings. It is the realtor. They want to show the hose in almost exactly 24 hours. Great! All my yard sale stuff is in boxes in the dining room, living room and upstairs hallway. The garage is only half unpacked! I haven’t vacuumed in a month! I am having a major FREAK OUT!

Ok, re-wind. We have been renting this house since September. The layout is just perfect for us! There are 3 bedrooms and a small alcove that we use for a homeschool classroom. It has 2 ½ bathrooms, and a decent sized kitchen. And did I mention it has a garage? We rented it with all the stress cracks and the splitting driveway. When I walk out my front door in the winter, at night, I can see the Northern Lights from my front porch! But… the owners have put it on the market again. The sign went up on the house, and the lock-boxes went on the doors about a month ago. The property manager said that the last time they had the house on the market it never showed. They know the house is very over-priced. They know it has flaws. But I would bet they didn’t know all the flaws!

Tuesday, Agnes and I finish re-packing and cleaning and vacuuming the entire house. A guy from Century 21 pulls into the driveway next door along with a woman in another car. They start looking and pointing at the outside of the house. I waved and said, “Hi there! Are you the people coming to look at the house?” They were, so I boogied downstairs. By the time I got outside, the Realtor had his card ready, and told me that they weren’t going to by the house.

Agnes and I celebrated by spending the day playing a horse game on the Wii! It was the first true day off that we spent together! I played her Horse game, and it was really fun! I can’t wait until we have the house in a state that we can relax and just play, so I can NOT be thinking about all the stuff I have to get moving out of the house!

Thursday, we went to see “Up!”, and then Thursday night we had a 9 hour “Doctor Who” Marathon! (God bless the inventor of the DVR!) Agnes and I are totally addicted to the series! We finished our movie popcorn after we finished dinner! It was another relaxing day!

Friday we slept late and then went over to the Southern Lights Chapel to personalize our PT shirts for the Midnight Sun Run. Rob is a great Youth Leader! I wish more people would stay involved during the summer, but I totally understand!

My next entry will be about our first race!  I am excited!

Later…

Lunch at Lu Lu’s

Well, I went to the Doctor this afternoon. Nothing big, just my ear has felt like I have been in a plane at take off, and my body has felt like I am on our old sailboat tied to the dock with a trawler kicking up a wake as it passes. Well, he said it was simple allergy ear, and that it makes sense because I haven’t taken any allergy medicine in… gosh… I don’t remember when I last took some. It must have been in March. Anyway, I am now taking Claritin once a day for the next 10 days to see if that dries it out. If it doesn’t, then we try Zyrtec. IF THAT doesn’t work… THEN they will take a closer look at it. I have done all the homeopathic and herbal things, mostly because I was worried about the dizziness. I have had the pressure for about 3 or for years on and off (mostly on) so I am used to it. The Doctor was nice, and he seemed to respect my not wanting to medicate. I was flat out honest that I would take the medicine if I had to, but I really didn’t want to use them. One of his statements when he looked at my ear was, “No infection that I can see so no worries about antibiotics.” Yeah! A medical professional in the Army who understands, doesn’t treat you like a person with jello for brains just because you don’t want antibiotics thrown at a problem, and respects the decision you make. Hooah!

Anyway, we stopped on the way home to mail a letter to Darren and make an appointment for Monte’s oil change and how-ever-many-mile checkup. My Terrific Teen decided that she wanted pizza, and proceeded to edge toward becoming a Terrible Teen when I told her she could make one at home. I was about to tell her I was going to make slop for lunch and dinner when I was struck with an inspired idea.

I have been reading this book about spoken blessings. It talks about blessing those people that hurt you or wrong you or whatever.I pulled the car into Lu Lu’s Bread and Bagels! I love this place! They have everything, and it is all fresh and local! It is what a friend of mine would probably call a “hippy café.” I have wanted to take Agnes there for quite awhile.

So we walk in and it smells amazing! There are fresh loaves of bread, coffee, quiche and all kinds of baking smells to welcome you further inside. We had trouble deciding what to have. When we got our order, it was fresh and warm and lifted both of our moods. We talked, I found some stuff to do when my parents get here in July, and decided that we need to have a once a week “date” at Lu Lu’s.

All in All, what could have been a poopy day has turned into a kind of cool memory for me.

Thank you God for my wonderful family! Bless my daughter with wisdom and strength to see the path you have asked her to follow and say, “Yes, Lord.” Bless my husband with a clear sense of direction and the fortitude to lead this family, no matter where he may be. And finally Lord, bless me with the ability to quiet down and hear the small, still voice that you use to guide me through these little, important things.
